HERI HOSPITAL

hr1.jpgLocated on the border between Tanzania and Burundi, Heri Hospital provides medical care for the local people, as well as war refugees. Over 150,000 people are served by its facilities.

ADRA's initial project with the hospital was to assist in the collection of clean water. By constructing large collection tanks on the campus they channeled the existing gutter to empty into the tanks. This has helped to provide the patients and workers with life-giving water. Currently there are several projects that ADRA has undertaken to help improve the hospital and its ability to benefit the community.

Heri Hydroelectric Plant

At the completion of this project, electricity will be supplied to the hospital twenty-four hours a day. ADRA has worked through several setbacks, including a small flood which damaged the initial dam and supports, conflicts with obtaining the correct soil to use on the banks, and searching for the proper parts to make the generator work properly in Africa. By working hand in hand with the government and creating a good relationship with TANESCO, the company who supplies electricity to most of Tanzania, this project will soon be completed. We hope that this hydroelectric plant will continue to serve the hospital for many years. The plant will save the hospital $50,000 a year, by replacing the cost of using of a generator for all tasks that require electricity.

Renovation Projects

The plan for renovation is three-fold. The first addition to be made is the installation of covered walkways between buildings, so that patients traveling between wards will be protected from the elements. This walkway will also connect to a common kitchen, the second part of this project. Most hospitals in Africa do not have the resources to provide meals for those in their care, and patients must rely on friends and family to come and cook for them during their stay. ADRA is creating a central location, with the needed materials, to assist these people in the preparation of food for the patients.

The third part of the renovation project includes the restoration of staff housing. With the construction of four new duplexes this project will provide running water, electricity, and a clean living environment so the faculty can learn and function better.
